The map remembers Falk long after the crowds moved on. Sally Falk Moore (January 18, 1924 – May 2, 2021) was a legal anthropologist and professor emerita at Harvard University.

Falk is the lone documented ghost town in Humboldt County — for now.

The story of Falk

California wrote the book on ghost towns, from Gold Rush tent cities to Owens Valley farm towns the aqueduct dried up.

Sally Falk Moore (January 18, 1924 – May 2, 2021) was a legal anthropologist and professor emerita at Harvard University. She did her major fieldwork in Tanzania and published extensively on cross-cultural, comparative legal theory. Moore was trained as a lawyer at Columbia Law school and, after working on Wall Street, became a staff attorney at the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg during the investigation of Nazi war criminals. She then returned to the US and received her PhD in anthropology from Columbia University in 1957.

What you'll find today

The on-the-ground condition of Falk is unverified — it's listed here with unknown status. That could mean standing buildings, or an empty field. Go prepared for either, and consider sharing what you find so the record improves.

Nobody has confirmed the access situation, so treat any visit as reconnaissance: verify land ownership first, and be ready to admire from the road.

Getting there

Here's the honest truth: access to Falk is unverified. We couldn't confirm whether the site sits on public land, private property, or something in between — so verify land ownership and local rules before visiting, and respect private property at all times.

Good to know

Ghost-town etiquette is simple: take only photographs. Removing artifacts is illegal on public lands and disrespectful everywhere else — and on federal land it can be a serious offense.
