The story of Amboy

California wrote the book on ghost towns, from Gold Rush tent cities to Owens Valley farm towns the aqueduct dried up.

Amboy is an unincorporated community in San Bernardino County, in California's Mojave Desert, west of Needles and east of Ludlow on historic Route 66. It is roughly 60 miles (97 km) northeast of Twentynine Palms. As of 2020, the town's business district still contained a post office, a historic restaurant-motel, and a Route 66 tourist shop, all operated by the town's population of four people. As of 2024, only the gas station was open, and the population was zero.

What you'll find today

Amboy never fully emptied out — it's a living historic town where a small community still tends the old buildings. Be a considerate guest: patronize local businesses, keep noise down, and remember people live here.

One caveat before you romanticize the trip: Amboy sits on private property. Set your expectations to a respectful roadside view unless you've secured the owner's permission — and never cross a fence or gate uninvited.

Getting there

Start from public roads: do not cross fences or gates without the owner's explicit permission. County assessor maps can help you sort out boundaries in advance — many private sites are best appreciated from the roadside. The mapped point for Amboy is roughly 34.5600, -115.7500 — use it as a starting point and cross-reference a current topographic map before leaving pavement.

Good to know

Ghost-town etiquette is simple: take only photographs. Removing artifacts is illegal on public lands and disrespectful everywhere else — and on federal land it can be a serious offense.

The ground itself demands respect: open mine shafts, collapsing floors, and old wells hide in tall grass, cell service is often nonexistent, and help can be hours away. Tell someone your plans, pack more water than you think you'll need — and save the early morning or late afternoon light for your camera.
