You don't stumble onto Whitewash Village by accident. That's rather the point. Whitewash Village was a village settlement on Monomoy Island in Massachusetts, established sometime around 1710.
Barnstable County holds 2 documented ghost towns, including Long Point — Whitewash Village keeps them company on the map.
The story of Whitewash Village
Massachusetts ghost towns are mill villages from the first Industrial Revolution — some of the oldest ruins in America.
Whitewash Village was a village settlement on Monomoy Island in Massachusetts, established sometime around 1710. The village may have received its name from the whitewashed painted buildings, although whether this is true is unclear. There was a belief that the settlement contained vestiges of a strong economic framework. This had lasted for many years, and had been "bestowed upon it” by God. A tavern for rowdy sailors was opened up in the location of today's Hospital Pond, known then as Wreck Cove and also reputed to have housed prostitutes for passing sailors.
What you'll find today
The on-the-ground condition of Whitewash Village is unverified — it's listed here with unknown status. That could mean standing buildings, or an empty field. Go prepared for either, and consider sharing what you find so the record improves.
Nobody has confirmed the access situation, so treat any visit as reconnaissance: verify land ownership first, and be ready to admire from the road.
Getting there
Here's the honest truth: access to Whitewash Village is unverified. We couldn't confirm whether the site sits on public land, private property, or something in between — so verify land ownership and local rules before visiting, and respect private property at all times.
Good to know
Ghost-town etiquette is simple: take only photographs. Removing artifacts is illegal on public lands and disrespectful everywhere else — and on federal land it can be a serious offense.
