Coal built some of Utah's strangest ghost towns. In Carbon and Emery counties, companies erected entire towns — houses, schools, stores — and paid workers in scrip redeemable only at the company store. It was feudalism with electric lights. Metal mining had its own cycle: silver booms, lead-zinc revivals during the world wars, then the long fade as ore grades fell. Verdure rode some version of that curve in San Juan County County. The stone and timber left behind are tougher than the economics were — which is why the ruins outlasted the reasons.
