Temple doesn't need a haunted reputation — the empty streets do the talking. The Detroit Masonic Temple is the world's largest Masonic Temple.

The story of Temple

Michigan's ghost towns are copper and iron towns of the Upper Peninsula, plus lumber camps the pine barons abandoned.

The Detroit Masonic Temple is the world's largest Masonic Temple. Located in the Cass Corridor neighborhood of Detroit, Michigan, at 500 Temple Street, the building serves as a home to various masonic organizations including the York Rite Sovereign College of North America. The building has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1980. The Detroit Masonic Temple contains a variety of public spaces, including three theaters, three ballrooms and banquet halls, and a 160-by-100-foot (49 m × 30 m) clear-span drill hall.

What you'll find today

The on-the-ground condition of Temple is unverified — it's listed here with unknown status. That could mean standing buildings, or an empty field. Go prepared for either, and consider sharing what you find so the record improves.

Nobody has confirmed the access situation, so treat any visit as reconnaissance: verify land ownership first, and be ready to admire from the road.

Getting there

Here's the honest truth: access to Temple is unverified. We couldn't confirm whether the site sits on public land, private property, or something in between — so verify land ownership and local rules before visiting, and respect private property at all times.

Good to know

Ghost-town etiquette is simple: take only photographs. Removing artifacts is illegal on public lands and disrespectful everywhere else — and on federal land it can be a serious offense.
