Some places earn their silence — and Omard is one of them. Omard was an unincorporated community around the intersection of Peck Road and Isles Road in Flynn Township, Sanilac County, Michigan, at approximately 43°15′25.6″N 82°54′11.3″W.
Omard is the lone documented ghost town in Sanilac County — for now.
The story of Omard
Michigan's ghost towns are copper and iron towns of the Upper Peninsula, plus lumber camps the pine barons abandoned.
Omard was an unincorporated community around the intersection of Peck Road and Isles Road in Flynn Township, Sanilac County, Michigan, at approximately 43°15′25.6″N 82°54′11.3″W. The first Omard schoolhouse was built in 1863, and on April 25, 1871 a post office was opened, which would operate until March 15, 1904. According to an 1884 history of the county, the "village" basically consisted at that time of the schoolhouse (which also served as a church meeting house) and the post office.
What you'll find today
The on-the-ground condition of Omard is unverified — it's listed here with unknown status. That could mean standing buildings, or an empty field. Go prepared for either, and consider sharing what you find so the record improves.
Nobody has confirmed the access situation, so treat any visit as reconnaissance: verify land ownership first, and be ready to admire from the road.
Getting there
Here's the honest truth: access to Omard is unverified. We couldn't confirm whether the site sits on public land, private property, or something in between — so verify land ownership and local rules before visiting, and respect private property at all times.
Good to know
Ghost-town etiquette is simple: take only photographs. Removing artifacts is illegal on public lands and disrespectful everywhere else — and on federal land it can be a serious offense.
