There's a particular quiet you only find where a town used to be. Lewiston has it. Lewiston is an extinct community in Sciota Township in Dakota County, Minnesota, United States. The community lies northeast of Northfield, and is nearest to the small city of Randolph.
The story of Lewiston
Minnesota's ghost towns are lumber camps and Iron Range locations, most of them already half-digested by the north woods.
Lewiston is an extinct community in Sciota Township in Dakota County, Minnesota, United States. The community lies northeast of Northfield, and is nearest to the small city of Randolph. A town once larger than nearby Northfield; gone in only fifteen years, but this town set near the Cannon River and Alta Avenue was home to many Minnesotan politicians, such as Edward J. Thye, Minnesota's governor; Pierce Butler became a United States Supreme Court justice, and Loren W. Collins was a Minnesota Supreme Court justice.
What you'll find today
The on-the-ground condition of Lewiston is unverified — it's listed here with unknown status. That could mean standing buildings, or an empty field. Go prepared for either, and consider sharing what you find so the record improves.
Nobody has confirmed the access situation, so treat any visit as reconnaissance: verify land ownership first, and be ready to admire from the road.
Getting there
Here's the honest truth: access to Lewiston is unverified. We couldn't confirm whether the site sits on public land, private property, or something in between — so verify land ownership and local rules before visiting, and respect private property at all times.
Good to know
Ghost-town etiquette is simple: take only photographs. Removing artifacts is illegal on public lands and disrespectful everywhere else — and on federal land it can be a serious offense.
