Coppermount isn't the ghost town on the postcards, which is exactly why it's worth knowing about. A ghost town of unknown status in Alaska.
Alaska's ghost towns are the most extreme on the continent — total commitment, total abandonment, everything preserved by the cold.
The story of Coppermount
Alaska doesn't do anything halfway, including ghost towns. The Klondike rush of 1897-98 stampeded a hundred thousand people toward the Yukon, and the ports that served them — Skagway, Dyea — exploded overnight. Coppermount comes from that stampede era or one of its echoes: the Nome gold rush of 1899, the copper mines at Kennecott, the canneries and railroad camps that followed. Alaska's booms were the most extreme on the continent — total commitment, total abandonment. When the gold ran out or the copper price fell, there was no driving to the next county for work. People just left, and the buildings stayed to argue with the weather.
With a name like Coppermount, nobody had to explain the business plan.
What you'll find today
The on-the-ground condition of Coppermount is unverified — it's listed here with unknown status. That could mean standing buildings, or an empty field. Go prepared for either, and consider sharing what you find so the record improves.
Nobody has confirmed the access situation, so treat any visit as reconnaissance: verify land ownership first, and be ready to admire from the road.
Getting there
Here's the honest truth: access to Coppermount is unverified. We couldn't confirm whether the site sits on public land, private property, or something in between — so verify land ownership and local rules before visiting, and respect private property at all times.
Good to know
Ghost-town etiquette is simple: take only photographs. Removing artifacts is illegal on public lands and disrespectful everywhere else — and on federal land it can be a serious offense.
