The story of Chise
New Mexico's ghost towns come in three flavors: Spanish and Mexican-era settlements that predated the Americans, railroad towns the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe conjured out of nothing, and mining camps that chased coal, copper, and gold through the state's hills. Dawson's coal mines, Santa Rita's copper pit, the gold camps of the Ortiz Mountains — each built a complete little world with a company store and company scrip. When the mines played out or the railroad dieselized and no longer needed its water stops, those worlds folded. Chise, out in Sierra County County, is one of the folds.
