Belle Fontaine doesn't need a haunted reputation — the empty streets do the talking. Belle Fontaine (; French: [bɛl fɔ̃ˈtɛn] ) is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Mobile County, Alabama, United States, on the western shore of Mobile Bay.
Baldwin County holds 4 documented ghost towns, including Bell Fontaine, Blakeley, Fort Morgan — Belle Fontaine keeps them company on the map.
The story of Belle Fontaine
Alabama's ghost towns are iron and coal towns around Birmingham and cotton ports the railroads replaced.
Belle Fontaine (; French: [bɛl fɔ̃ˈtɛn] ) is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Mobile County, Alabama, United States, on the western shore of Mobile Bay. It is located south of the city of Mobile, along the stretch of shore between the Deer River and the Fowl River. As of the 2020 census, its population was 613. The Belle Fontaine shoreline experiences the occasional jubilee, a rare phenomenon in which fish and crustaceans swarm in the water, just off the beach.
What you'll find today
Belle Fontaine is classified as a preserved ghost town: its buildings and streetscape survive close to their original form. These are the most rewarding towns to visit — and the most fragile. Stay on marked paths, don't enter unstable structures, and leave every artifact where you found it.
Nobody has confirmed the access situation, so treat any visit as reconnaissance: verify land ownership first, and be ready to admire from the road.
Getting there
Here's the honest truth: access to Belle Fontaine is unverified. We couldn't confirm whether the site sits on public land, private property, or something in between — so verify land ownership and local rules before visiting, and respect private property at all times.
Good to know
Ghost-town etiquette is simple: take only photographs. Removing artifacts is illegal on public lands and disrespectful everywhere else — and on federal land it can be a serious offense.
