The map remembers Appanoose long after the crowds moved on. Appanoose (died after 1843), whose name translates roughly as "a chief when a child", was a 19th-century Meskwaki chief who lived in Iowa; he was the son of Taimah (Chief Tama) and probably a grandson of Quashquame.
Franklin County holds 6 documented ghost towns, including Greenwood, Minneola, Norwood — Appanoose keeps them company on the map.
The story of Appanoose
Kansas ghost towns are what happens when the railroad changes its mind and the wheat stops paying.
Appanoose (died after 1843), whose name translates roughly as "a chief when a child", was a 19th-century Meskwaki chief who lived in Iowa; he was the son of Taimah (Chief Tama) and probably a grandson of Quashquame. Prior to European-American settlement in the 19th century, the tribe occupied territory in what became Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois and Iowa. He was notably the only leading chief of the combined Sac and Fox tribes said to have been born west of the Mississippi River.
What you'll find today
The on-the-ground condition of Appanoose is unverified — it's listed here with unknown status. That could mean standing buildings, or an empty field. Go prepared for either, and consider sharing what you find so the record improves.
Nobody has confirmed the access situation, so treat any visit as reconnaissance: verify land ownership first, and be ready to admire from the road.
Getting there
Here's the honest truth: access to Appanoose is unverified. We couldn't confirm whether the site sits on public land, private property, or something in between — so verify land ownership and local rules before visiting, and respect private property at all times.
Good to know
Ghost-town etiquette is simple: take only photographs. Removing artifacts is illegal on public lands and disrespectful everywhere else — and on federal land it can be a serious offense.
