The story of Antelope Flats
South Pass was where the Oregon Trail crossed the Rockies, and for a few years in the late 1860s it was also a gold rush — South Pass City, Atlantic City, Miner's Delight, a whole instant civilization at 8,000 feet. Then the railroad chose a route to the south, the placer gold thinned, and the high camps emptied almost as fast as they'd filled. Antelope Flats belongs to Wyoming's boom-and-bust tradition in the backcountry: mineral wealth discovered at the worst possible altitude, a town built for a decade, and a landscape too harsh to offer a second act.
